GT28RS Turbo Upgrade Kit
Speed Source is proud to announce the availability of our 3SGTE Garrett GT28RS turbo upgrade kit! The kit, of almost a year of design, is the premium implementation of the GT28 on the 3SGTE. There are other GT28 kits out there, but they cannot match our quality or design. If you are interested to find out why, read on!

So, to find out what is so much better about the Speed Source kit, lets take a look at what is usually involved with a turbo upgrade kit. The main components are some type of adaptor plate to mate the new turbo with the existing manifold, a downpipe to mate to the existing exhaust, the new turbo, the hardware and fasteners, and the oil and water plumbing to hook it all up. So how can one kit be so much better than the rest, they all use the same turbo right? Well, the answer lies in all the details. Let me show you!

The adaptor plate seems the logical place to start, as it determines the “packaging” of the entire turbo system. What I mean by packaging is the overall position and fit of the turbo components as a system, with reference to the other components of the engine. When engineering this kit, we placed the turbo in a position to allow the use of the factory inlet elbow, the stock manifold heat shield, and to allow the effective routing of the oil and water lines from the turbo. The position we chose also places the turbo outlet in the same position as stock. This minimizes other changes you would have to make to install the turbo. The adaptor plate itself is CNC machined in-house on our vertical machining center from cold-rolled steel. It is then ceramic coated for corrosion resistance.

The downpipe we provide with this kit is entirely fabricated from 3 inch steel tubing. The flanges are generously sized to allow good contact between the turbo outlet and the flange, this minimizes the chance for warping. The tubing is TIG and MIG welded where appropriate. The downpipe clears the AC compressor on MR2 and GT4 cars. A small bracket is provided to reference the bottom flange to the engine to firm up the assembly and prevent strain on the downpipe, turbo, and manifold. The stock Toyota O2 sensor bolts directly to the downpipe on a 2 bolt flange. There is also a threaded O2 bung at the bottom of the downpipe to allow a second or wideband O2. A plug is included for those that do not need this extra bung. The entire downpipe is coated in a high-temperature ceramic coating, inside and out. This coating is then polished and looks near-chrome.

The turbos that we supply are factory new Garrett GT units, in various trims and A/R’s to suit the particular application. We use GT28RS in .63A/R mostly, but also can fit the GT2871R as well for higher total power potential. These turbos are internally wastegated, dual ceramic ball bearing, water cooled, and very efficient. We supply a CNC punched and bent stainless bracket to relocate the GT wastegate actuator.

The oil and water plumbing is an area that most turbo kit manufactures just do not understand. They hurry to throw together whatever they can find that works, and this often means bulky rubber hoses, a stack of adaptors, and sometimes dangerous routing. We have seen oil drain and feed hoses so dangerous, that they actually can set the car on fire! Serious stuff indeed…. We understand performance automotive plumbing, and our goal with the oil and water plumbing is to make it as close to factory as possible.

For the oil feed line, we use a custom CNC turned adaptor to fit a –4 Teflon-stainless hose to the block. This oil line is professional crimped at the fittings and pressure-tested. It mates to the turbo with a banjo bolt. We have found that this is the only reliable way to feed oil to these GT turbos. To drain the oil from the turbo, we manufacture a CNC bent tube that is silver-brazed to the flange. This routes well away from the hot downpipe, and is then expanded and beaded to fit the stock rubber 120 degree elbow on the oil pan. This is finished in black paint. The water cooling lines are manufactured in a similar fashion, using the proper banjo fittings silver induction-brazed to a bent tube. These tubes are beaded for proper hose retention, black painted, and nest together nicely. These tubes bolt to the turbo with banjos bolts and crush washers. They exit over the top of the turbo and out the corner of the heat shield, similar to the factory routing. The result is a safe, well packaged plumbing system that looks like factory.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, most aftermarket turbo kit manufactures do not understand the hardware and fasteners needed to survive the harsh hot turbocharger environment. They rely on blind bolts or lock washers to retain the turbocharger and downpipe. Lock washers rely on spring tension to provide the locking, this gets completely cooked out by the extreme temperature of the manifold and turbo, and after the first heat cycle they are basically flat washers. The Speed Source kit is different; we have engineered the fasteners for each application. To retain the adaptor plate to the manifold, we use the factory Toyota studs and nuts, they are very high quality and perfect for the application. To retain the turbo to the adaptor plate, we provide 304 stainless steel locking studs and stainless all-metal mechanical locking nuts. The combination of stainless locking studs and the mechanical locking nuts proves to be an extremely robust method for mounting both the turbo and downpipe. The oil drain tube is fastened with cad-plated cap screws and washers. Banjo bolts and crush washers are supplied for the water cooling lines, as well as Goodyear cooling hose and hose clamps.

I am sure you can now see the features that set the Speed Source GT28RS turbo upgrade kit apart from the rest. It is the details such as the oil and water plumbing, appropriate hardware and fasteners, and proper packaging that make this a world-class system. I hope that you will find a use for it on your car!
